I love how photographers used graphical elements particularly in the Modern styles of the 50's and 60's.  Very often you find stark black and whites:  hard shadows, bright whites, and creamy midtones.  Black and white photography depends on the definitions between these three basic tones. In creating this portrait of Patrick, I wanted to utilize those basic elements.

The smaller the light source, the harder the shadow. So, a bare strobe bulb was used and suspended 10 feet away and 10 feet high.  Patrick stood on white vinyl approximately 2 feet away from the background.  I used my 85mm 1.2L - f8 @125th 100iso
